My computer died in its sleep

My computer died in its sleep A couple of days ago I put my computer to sleep before I got to bed (even though it’s silent…it’s then quiet;) ). When I tried to wake it up, it didn’t!

Then I tried just about everything…from trying another PSU to removing all components and reinstalling them one by one. The PSU was intact. So was also the harddrives, and the memory (tested in one of my other computers).

I’ve been using computers since I was 5-6 years old, and I think I was about 10 the first time I actually opened a pc. I have however not experienced this happening this silently before. I don’t think there was lightning that night…

Belkin SurgeMaster Superior 6Now I’m crossing my fingers and hope that it’s the motherboard. I’ve ordered another Asus A8N-SLI Premium, and ofcourse a Belkin SurgeMaster Superior 6.

UPDATE: It was the motherboard. However, the powersupply made terrible noises when I started the computer after replacing the motherboard. So now I’ve ordered a 500w MIST PSU.

How to find (and monitor) your domain

It’s been a while since I’ve been on the search for domain names, but then today I remembered that I had an idea years ago. I was thinking that it should be possible to develop a online service that monitors the currently available domains and then sends you an email as soon as they’re available. After googling I found Domain Watcher. However, they charge “£9.99 (approx. $19 USD or EUR15) to monitor the domain of interest for 12 months.” I think this should be a free service from the domain registrar.

After googling some more I found an application called Domain Name Pro. This is indeed a very neat application. What I find interesting is that you may add a few word combinations, and the application comes up with lots of alterntives (using a thesaurus). This application could also be useful if you are looking for a suitable name for your product or company.

I still think that this service should be available online, with the possibility of subscribing to feeds and notification. If such a (free) service doesn’t exist already, I guess it soon will. It will probably take advantage of the popular AJAX development technique.

UPDATE: I found a freeware version of the application. It’s however a lot simpler, but it has no restrictions.

UPDATE 2: Domainnameshop offers a free monitoring of your domain. Subscribe for monitoring of domains and get an email notification when it’s available. Thanks to Håvard this tips.

BumpTop 3D Desktop

I know I’ve discussed with friends years ago when the desktop would become fully 3D. I don’t know if this is a good idea, but it indeed looks great. It can however be discussed wheather it’s efficient to use. What do you think?

Watch me trying my new Powerball!

I tried my friend Åsmund’s Powerball, and I just had to buy one of these :) It’s fun to use and good training at the same time. I’ll try to use this once in a while to avoid getting the Repetetive Strain Injury. Watch my amateur video :)

Watch this guy using two powerballs at the same time! Amazing!

Color Laser - look at the size!

New Color Laser Yohoo! :) I (the company I work for) recently bought a new Multifunction Color Laser Printer. It’s pretty neat! One thing that shocked me, however, was the size. It’s pretty HUGE!

Tips for Transana users

TransanaI’ve used Transana when transcribing the interviews for my thesis experiments. I really recommend using this application. It’s free and it has all you need. When transcribing you use CTRL-A to rewind a few seconds, CTRL-S to pause and rewind 2 seconds, CTRL-D just to pause, CTRL-F to skip forward a few seconds. The software can be used for video transcriptions as well as for recording. However, it does not support mpeg4 yet. It didn’t matter to me as I was only trascribing wav-files. Still the main argument, in my opinion, for choosing Transana instead of a Word & Winamp (using global hotkeys) solution, is the use of the timecodes. You connect the transcription to the actual recording. This is very useful.
When analyzing the data I exported the transcription to word, as I prefer this to Transana’s keyword functionality. But the exported rtf-document contains the “¤<23423>” timecodes. After googling about word and regex queries I found the pattern I needed. For those interested use this pattern: ¤\< (<[0-9]*>)\>

Buying a new digicam

Canon Ixus II bought my current camera, the Canon Ixus I about two years ago. I choose the camera mainly because of its size. But that’s where the good points stops (in my opinion). It looks like the camera has a auto-blur function. About half my pictures are useless since they’re blurry, and it’s hard to tell if the photo is good or bad before copying it to the pc because of its crappy 80 000 pixels display. The USB-interface is version 1 (slooow). The video function is crap. The good thing was that it was actually possible to record up 3min videos then, but now most cameras have no such limitation. The video resolution is only 320×240. I’ve actually tried recording a video with the same light conditions and compared it to my girlfriend’s Canon Ixus 700. My video was dark and hers was viewable. So okay…I need a new camera, but which? (Read the article)

Track your site with Google Analytics

Google AnalyticsI finally got my google analytics account after 4-5 weeks of waiting, and it’s indeed something worth waiting for! It’s still in beta, so you have to wait for an account, but why not sign up now. I’ve been trying different stats scripts for my sites, but this one has all the known features and adds a lot more! It seems like google has been in contact with lots of network operators and have mapped the ips to the customers location. I must say I was kind of shocked when my local address popped up in the geo map overview! It’s also looking a lot more neat now with in depth grahps and charts. I like that. :) If you want to read more about Google Analytics, check out the Google Analytics Review.
